I am a neuroscientist. I am also an equestrian. Amid these two poles, a third element is fundamental to my life, and it is just as enigmatic as two others: Art.
I grew up surrounded by paintings. My father was an artist. As a young man, he trained in the atelier of Matteo Pedrali, a painter of a certain fame from our hometown, Palazzolo sull’Oglio in Lombardia. Almost every inch of every wall in our home was covered with paintings! I was immersed in colors, canvases, painting supplies – “doors” opening to worlds my father drew his inspirations from.… So, I have drawn along… all the time!
As a scientist, I like to understand and explain, with precision. When I play with colors, they escape my control. This attracts my attention, triggers questions and feelings… is this Art?
To complicate things, I married a poet. My husband Tristan has a brain that never stops.
In his view, words have a founding power. They make thoughts and sensations “real”; the words used to decipher one’s past, present and future form a whole, from which springs out joy, equanimity or sorrow.
During the pandemic, Tristan and I, serendipitously, started putting images against or together with words – we do not have a fixed pattern. This resulted in “Cycling and Nothingness’, ‘Pegasus Rising” and “Impermanence”. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them. I needed all of them to stay sane and, well, be me!
