Inspirations

Gel plate monoprintig on rice paper

Inspirations often come ‘out of nowhere’.  Triggers unexpected, associations borne from chance. Here is one that created a frenzy of activity, a binge almost.  Thoughtful, nevertheless.

Recently, Hung went on a tour through galleries of New York City, rejoicing in ‘in person’  encounters with New York school artists, her favorites. Rothko, Krasner, Koenig… Paper games on our mind, an unexpected reminiscence of Lee Krasner‘s ripped paper collages came back fresh and inspiring.

Returning to her studio after an unsuccessful show, Lee went on a rampage, cutting and tearing apart her drawings and canvases.  Thrown randomly onto the floor, ripped pieces came together in unexpected ways, inspiring a series of unique collages, combining paper and canvas pieces, shapes, colors, and light.

Then, inspired by Matisse and his cutouts, she started using her shredded paintings as raw materials for a body of powerful, emotive collages, transforming the shreds of her paintings into a radical new direction in her oeuvre.

“It strikes me that the collages are Krasner’s most autobiographical works. What is not autobiography if it’s not selecting chunks of the past and artfully reorienting them in the present? Each collage was a work…ripe with her joys and sorrows.”

Bridget Quinn (15 Women Who Made Art and Made History)

Our celebration of Lee’s collages comes in a form of rice paper prints – destined to be cut-out in pieces and re-arranged in a collage of the multifaceted brain.

A bold confluence of pink and orange, ‘Bald Eagle’ is the inspiration for these works.
