(im)Perfect

Polymer Clay

Workshop, Aug 8th

Being perfect does not always mean being beautiful, or innovative or amazing. Haven’t you noticed that imperfections often create a feeling of warmth, real, hearty beauty – I’d rather have an imperfect piece that wakes up emotions than a perfection for the sake of it.

Our polymer clay workshop was all about letting our hearts and right brains take over and not worrying about making polished pieces – many of us were only recent inductees into this playful and versatile art form.

I labored a lot over my Japanese bowl design, aiming for perfection, too ambitious (I am a complete novice in this), setting myself up for a failure; and yet, I could not have been more pleased with the far from perfect result – with its delicate, leathery feel, earthy colors and stark shape, the bowl is perfect for me, despite some air bubbles and tiny cracks – they almost make it more authentic…

The atmosphere was a snapshot of a seaside resort – glimmering water in the pool reflecting off a bloom of turquoise umbrellas, busy hands and home-made ice cream. Learning, trying, innovating… The results are stunning…the explosion of colors and shapes.. Imperfect and beautiful! And so overtly reflective of our different and unique creative personas…

Here are our surprising little creations in the second summer catalogue!
