Blue(s)

Acrylic paintings

We experience a sensory overload of colors daily without giving much thought about their ‘meaning’.

The color blue represents both the sky and the sea and is associated with open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration, and sensitivity. Blue is depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, and intelligence.

Blue triggers the body to produce chemicals that are calming and create feeling of tranquility. Light blue is associated with health, understanding, and softness.  Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness.

The deep indigo of stormy seas can carry more threatening or frightening associations, making us feel unsettled or evoking secrets deeply held. Blue’s association with depression and sadness are also pervasive, and deep blue is unsettling, a harbinger of night and darkness.

Who would have thought that just one color can ‘mean’ all of this?

Many painters have embraced blue as a foundation of their expression. Here is an amazing exploration of ‘shades of blue’ in a series of acrylic paintings by one of our own artists. In her words:

This was my exploration of the meaning of the ‘blue’ – sometimes peaceful harmony, sometimes sadness (hence – blues), sometimes a purely abstract juxtapositions of shades and shapes.  Almost always, unplanned…

It could be said that any color could evoke meanings and emotions of the moment if explored in unplanned painting trips, like mine.  Yet, this inclination towards shades of blue must not be accidental.  It is hard to see shades of red triggering this many fine layers of contemplation.  But, it is probably just me…’
