Multimedia installation
This project was spawned out in response to the challenge of the OHBM BrainArt 2023 exhibit – a theme of Multifaceted Brain, including 3 Axes:
Axis I. Adaptation and diversity across cultures.
Axis II. Diversity of human sexuality
Axis III. Neurodiversity
The concept for the installation endorsed by the jury was anchored around a sculpture of an ’empty mind’ that comes alive with stories of life experiences that touch upon all three exhibit axes.
The ‘Hollow Mind‘ is an abstract sculpture suspended in the ‘circle of life’; the mind fillers – life stories – are told in a ‘Carousel‘ of images, somewhat faded, their clarity elusive, projected onto a wall or a big screen. They can be seen through the hollow brain, filling it with a diversity of imprints, heritage, and memories. These are stories that trigger reflection, introspection, and interpretation. Fleeting, yet pervasive, transitory, yet imprinted. With them flowing in, the Hollow Mind becomes curious, multifaceted in its diversity of experience, perception, adaptation, and emotion.
The prelude to this project were ‘Paper Games’, which generated much of the imagery for the Carousel stories. Here, we open up the chronicle of how they came together in ‘All in One’ BrainArt 2023 installation.
This was emotionally demanding. logistically challenging and an incredibly impactful project. You can ‘just’ skip directly to watching the video record of the Exhibit and the Carousel of mind-filler stories. But, in doing so, you will be missing interesting musings about intentional and intuitive concepts that lie behind these stories, some triggered by experiences that made deep marks on our own lives. Hence, explore the short write ups below that will all lead you to the ‘Carousel’. Unless you truly prefer to interpret it entirely on your own, without words, just images flying through…
