Sleepers

Sculptures, garden, prints

Summer is sneaking in shyly, garden awakening, busy with critters and birds, blooms emerging. Yet, few ‘inhabitants’ of my garden remain sleepy in their dreaming reverie amongst chirping, breezes, and fragrances of nature.   These are my garden sculptures that I sprinkled around over time; now an integral fabric of the garden. Several of them are ‘sleepers’, a cherub napping peacefully on the edge of the fish pond, water irises brushing its face and frogs resting in its lap. A gentle maiden sleeping in a bush of peonies…scenes of incredible tranquility; sleep without worries, moments of a blissful rest..

I do not quite know why I wanted to capture these garden inhabitants  in a different way; to extract their peaceful reverie away from garden surroundings and make it ‘universal’ – nor do I know whether I succeeded in doing this.

We all change in deep sleep, physically, facial features relaxed, postures defenseless, breathing at ease. I would love to see myself in peaceful sleep – where are we then?  Whom are we communicating with – silent parts of our brains or other universes? Why is the time and order gone and all mixed up? Is eight hours of no self- awareness our most natural state? Well, these are mostly afterthoughts – capturing the moments of my garden sculptures lost in dreams was the purpose.

This is a small series of monotype prints of garden statues and 3D objects- sleepers among them. Oblivious of the outside, imbedded in their inner workings and tranquility. I will make a point to nap in my garden in warm summer afternoons this season, carelessly.
