Weak Signals

Gel print image transfer

We have supreme photographers among us – sensitive, emotional, original lenses. Once, Natasha revealed her art in one simple statement – searching for weak signals.

I am not a photographer – my photos are good, sometimes witty, but ordinary. Unexpectedly, I stumbled upon the way of projecting ‘weak signals’.

It goes like this – I search for images in old glossy magazines, that, taken out of the of the context (often advertising) take a new life – the meaning hidden behind the glossing. I transfer them to a gel plate printout adding pastel colors and some subtle symbols; the edges blur, the sharpness fades, some smudging brings the quality of aged photos. Combine them in different contexts, create a small series that tell a story. Weak signals with emotional load, a haze you need to unveil to reach into depth of their true message. Some are commentary on our ‘current state’ – loss of privacy, shaded nuances of murky identity, cultural diversity, burden of work and life…some are reflections on personal past.

The series ‘Fading memories’ is created as a reflection upon momentous milestones in a life span, that leave a mark on our identity. And upon a devastation of loosing them in a grip of aging and dementia.

This is a very different way for me, color loving – almost monochromatic but strangely expressive. Color is sparse, a little burst occasionally, making it more precious.

Another Game on our path to exploring paper as a medium and creating a collective installation. The theme of the OHBM BrainArt 2023 exhibition, now revealed, is ‘The Multifaceted Brain: Adaptation and Diversity’. Part of this collection will become a core for the installation – more Games on the way!
