OHBM BrainArt 2021

June 20th, 2021

Our ‘Colors of the Music’ project is currently exhibited at the 2021 OHBM BrainArt exhibition! In the company of brain-exploring art collections of some amazing artists; we are humbled and excited to be part of this event.

On display were colorful and thoughtful digital brain images, neuronal ‘connections’ depicted using inks and watercolors, ingenious assemblies of drawings from a population sampling…and much more. One of the art presentations painted music from the experience of chromesthetic individuals – very complementary to our own explorations of music-color associations in ‘Colors of the Music’ project. You can browse through full exhibition display at OHBM Brain Art (ohbm-brainart.github.io).

Today we had ‘Meet the artists’ open discussion session – touching upon the interplay of art and neurosciences. Our discussions explored subjects ranging from communicating with those suffering from mental illness and dementia through the art, depicting diverse perceptions of our external and internal realities in artistic imagery, using advanced imaging to record previously unknown phenomena underlying brain functions… and more.

The bold concept, or rather an observation from one of the exhibiting artists, that arts and sciences are a seamless continuum, deserved a lot of reflections and commentary. This one is truly close to my heart! A world seen through different lenses – both striving to comprehend and express its individual or universal realities.

It was just a short hour – we could not go far enough – we met for the first time, and virtually; towards the end, we felt a ‘vibe’ – an unspoken connection that links our original experiences in exploring brain and mind with our common inner need to express them in whatever art form is our extension.

To learn more about this unique stage for neuroscience and art, you can read a manuscript recently published by the BrainArt SIG in PsyArXiv.
