Rothko, Hung and I

Mixed media assemblies

This is a story of bead baking… You must be thinking – what does Rothko have to do with bead baking?

Well, here it goes…

Hung and I were making some suncatchers and garden decorations from plastic beads on my deck to brighten our spirits dampened by the pandemic situation. A girlish play turning into little more…

Our suncatchers became very popular and were gifted to many friends for their windows and kids. Little colorful bowls we turned into garden flowers…

Designs of small and large pieces became more thoughtful, Rothko-like blocks of colors, then assembled in small paintings. The semi-transparent nature of these glassy little pieces gives them a particular appeal – the borders of color blocks are blurred, like ink or water color; some of these small paintings turned into abstract gardening stories.

It was fun and calming to arrange beads into larger pre-conceived designs. We are toying with the idea of having another collective project…
