Fifty Shades of White

Drawing and photography

What can I say, drawing is challenging…especially as a stand-alone art-form. These days, we avoid it altogether by turning to abstract art.

In ‘old days’, however, you had to prep for your oil or acrylic painting with series of drawing studies and sketches…

My personal favorites are fast sketches of a moment, shape, form – minimal lines, yet the whole story is there – moment captured, mood transparent, the whole personal or emotional worlds in just few lines..

Interestingly, drawing is a fantastic aid for memory retention – in other words, you learn much better when you draw than when you read, combine the two and you are ready to memorize the most complex anatomy lessons (my professional life).

Along the way, we found some other ways to circumvent a subtle but challenging art of pencil drawing – digital sketching and photography. While the first is somewhat obvious, one of our photographers found an unusual way to bring drawing-like qualities to some of her ‘minimalist’ depictions of winter landscapes.

Here are our explorations in drawing, computer sketching and ‘minimalist’ photography through two engaging stories – enjoy!
